The Vinyl Experience with Paul Cavalconte

Air Date: 1 March 2013
Host: Pauk Cavalconte | PRN
Time: 00:56:40

We’re on location this week in New York’s Soho district at the Recess gallery where artist Rutherford Chang opened his store to display nothing but used copies of the Beatles’ WHITE ALBUM. His show, We Buy White Albums, contains 650 numbered first-pressings of the 1968 self-titled Beatles album presented here in an interactive exhibit. We’re also going to play some unique interpretations of the album’s songs.

The Vinyl Experience is a radio show all about LP records and the culture of analog recording. Dubbed from original vinyl on collectors Hi-Fi gear, New York radio host Paul Cavalconte tells a new story with records each week–your story, and mine.

Host Paul Cavalconte has collected and played records since Scruffy The Tugboat on a yellow plastic 7-inch 78 rpm record. And that was last year. No seriously, he was 4. He took it into the bathtub every Saturday night. It was a real clean record. At 19 he became a DJ in New York City on WFUV. At 52, he also became a DJ in New York City on WFUV.

Here are those song interpretations, played in their order of appearance on the original.

Playlist:

  1. Billy Joel: Back In the USSR
  2. Siouxsee & The Banshees: Dear Prudence
  3. The Marmalade: Ob la Di Ob La Da
  4. The Pixies: Wild Honey Pie
  5. Kenny Rankin: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  6. Danger Mouse/Jay Z/Beatles: What More Can I Say
  7. The Breeders: Happiness Is A Warm Gun
  8. Slade (aka Ambrose Slade): Martha My Dear
  9. CSN: Blackbird
  10. Georgia Satellites: Don’t Pass Me By
  11. Harry Nilsson: Mother Nature’s Son
  12. The Feelies: Everybody’s Got Something To Hide (Except Me And My Monkey)
  13. Paul Weller: Sexy Sadie
  14. U2: Helter Skelter
  15. Barbara Striesand: Honey Pie
  16. Ella Fitzgerald: Savoy Truffle

Below are the front and back covers of artist Rutherford Chang’s The White Album released in a limited edition of 800 copies, each included a 24″x24″ poster featuring images of other original covers displayed in the exhibit.

The cover art was comprised of composite overlays of the weathered and defaced originals displayed in the exhibit, many of which were doctored by their young owners who used the pristine surface as a canvas for messages and doodles.
